PM Modi reaches Kolkata’s huge rally as soon as Mithun Chakraborty joins BJP

West Bengal Assembly Elections: PM Modi will address about 20 rallies in Bengal till the elections.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Kolkata this afternoon to address a massive rally, his first in the state after the assembly election dates were announced last week. The anticipation of their visit was only fueled by the presence of popular actor Mithun Chakraborty at the venue. The star joined the BJP shortly before the main event began at the city’s Brigade Parade Ground.

The Prime Minister landed in the city around 2 pm, although a huge crowd had gathered at the venue hours before.

Mr Chakraborty’s joining the BJP put an end to the ongoing speculation about his presence at the function. The party’s state in-charge Kailash Vijayvargiya said, “I have spoken to him (Mr. Chakraborty) over telephone, he is going to come today. I will be able to comment on him only after a detailed discussion.” He was accompanied by Star yesterday at his residence in Belgachia area of the state capital.

However, the actor was not the only one who graced the stage in Kolkata today. Several folk artists attended the event, reported ANI. Along with the main stage being 72 feet long, two other stages have also been set up, one for Tollywood actors and the other for other important personalities. The other two stages are 48 feet in length, 24 feet in width and 7 feet in height.

Besides Mr. Vijayvargiya, other BJP functionaries overseeing the rally include National Vice President Mukul Roy, General Secretary Sanjay Singh and Rajya Sabha Swapna Dasgupta.

More than 1,500 CCTV cameras have been installed across the city for security purposes. Drone cameras will also be used to monitor the venue. Sources told ANI that at least 7 lakh people are expected to attend the rally. For the purpose of security, three main barricades have been strategically placed towards the main platform. Barricades and helipad have been built in the race course near Brigade Ground.

BJP sources told ANI that this is likely to be the first of the prime minister’s 20 rallies across the state. This comes a day after the party announced its first list of 57 candidates for the polls and two days after the Trinamool Congress announced its 291 candidates, leaving three for its ally Gorkha Janmukti Morcha.

Elections to the 294-seat assembly of West Bengal are to be held in eight phases from March 27 to April 29 and the results will be declared on May 2.

After winning three seats in the 2016 assembly election, the BJP had made deep inroads in the state by the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, winning 18 of the 42 seats and reducing the Trinamool’s tally to 22. The Congress won two while the Left got none.
