Britain says Russian spies are almost certainly behind the Kremlin criticism

Washington:

Britain said on Wednesday that Russia had a case to answer on the poisoning of Alexei Navalny because it was almost certain that Russian intelligence services carried out the attack with Novichok, a Soviet-developed chemical weapon.

Foreign Secretary Dominic Rabb, speaking in Washington with Mike Pompeo, said he welcomed Navalny’s recovery but Russia had a case to answer as the use of chemical weapons was unacceptable.

Raab said, “The Russian government is obliged to explain what happened to Mr. Navalny.”

“From the UK’s point of view, it is very difficult to see any plausible alternative explanations being made by the Russian intelligence services, but certainly the Russian government has a case to answer,” Raab said.

Navalny on Tuesday shared a picture from a hospital in Berlin bedridden and circling his family, and said he could breathe freely by eating poison in Siberia last month.

President Vladimir Putin’s main rival fell violently during the election campaign on 20 August and fled to Berlin.

Germany says laboratory tests in three countries have determined that she was poisoned with the Novichok nerve agent, and Western governments have demanded an explanation from Russia.

Moscow has called the allegations baseless.
