The Income Tax Department has asked the taxpayers to file the return within the stipulated date. The last date for filing Income Tax Return (ITR) without late fee for the financial year 2021-22 (AY 2022-23) is July 31, 2022 (unless extended by the government).

The IT department in a tweet urged people to file early.

Adding the hashtag #FileNow, the Income Tax Department said, “ITR filing for the election year 2022-23 is available on the e-filing portal. Check your Form 26AS, AIS and other relevant documents before submitting. Be an early filer “

The due date for filing ITR is the date up to which the return can be filed without any penalty.

In case of corporates, the last date for filing ITR is 31 October of the assessment year (unless extended by the government).

The new e-filing portal, launched on June 7, 2021, started from the very beginning with taxpayers and professionals reporting discrepancies and difficulties in its functioning. Infosys was awarded the contract to develop the portal in 2019.

A year later, several users said that many issues still remained, after which the IT department asked Infosys to resolve it on a priority basis.

Meanwhile, Central Board of Direct Taxes chairperson Sangeeta Singh said earlier this month that there has been an increase in the number of income tax returns in FY22 as compared to the previous fiscal.

Ms Singh told news agency PTI that the number of income tax returns in the last fiscal stood at 7.14 crore, as against 6.9 crore in the previous financial year, showing a clear increase.

For FY 2012, the tax collection is over Rs 14 lakh crore, which, according to the Chairman, is quite good as compared to the FY 2010 collection.
