Sugar exports touch record high during 2020-21

India exported an all-time high of 7.23 million tonnes of sugar during the 2020-21 marketing year, which ended on September 30, 2021. The sugar marketing year runs from October to September.

Exports for 2020-21 were 20 per cent higher than the 5.9 million tonnes of sugar that was exported during the 2019-20 marketing year. As per industry estimates, the growth in exports was mainly due to higher demand and substantial financial support by the government.

The Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) has estimated that production is likely to remain flat in the new marketing season of 2021-22.

According to the All India Sugar Trade Association (AISTA) data, about 6 million tonnes of sugar was exported with the help of government subsidy, while 7.85 lakh tonnes were exported without subsidy during the recently concluded marketing year.

India, which is the world’s second largest producer of sugar after Brazil, exported a maximum of 1.82 million tonnes to Indonesia.

AISTA said Afghanistan, the United Arab Emirates and Somalia were the other three countries that received the highest number of consignments of sugar from India.

The association said export deals of around 1.5 million tonnes have been done so far in the recently started marketing year 2021-22.
