Mustard oil and weight loss: Does cooking with mustard oil reduce extra kilos?

What are the ingredients that are common in every kitchen? One of the most common answers is oil. Oil is a basic requirement for cooking every dish. We need oil at every step of the recipe – from marinating to garnishing. However, the type of oil varies as per the requirement of the recipe. While pasta is made with olive oil, we use refined oil for frying pakodas, samosas etc. Then we have mustard oil. Extracted from mustard, this oil has a pungent pungent odor that adds an earthy flavor and texture to the dishes you indulge in. We can see the widespread use of mustard oil in the eastern and north eastern part of India. In fact, a Bengali, Bihari or Assamese kitchen is not complete without a bottle of mustard oil (or mustard oil).

According to food experts, mustard oil is considered one of the most ancient fats used for cooking (the other two are ghee and coconut oil). It is also believed that mustard oil is beneficial for health. It is known to be great for hair, skin, immune health and more. Remember when our grandmothers used mustard oil for hair and body messages? Traditional medicine says that rubbing mustard oil all over the body can help prevent the common cold. Benefits of Mustard Oil | Mustard oil for weight loss:

Bangalore-based nutritionist Dr Anju Sood stresses on the use of mustard oil in daily cooking as it is loaded with monounsaturated fatty acids – this further promotes overall health. “Our bodies require oil in a 3:1 ratio — three parts polyunsaturated fatty acids and one part saturated fatty acids. Monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) come under polyunsaturated,” she adds.

For those unaware, MUFAs are known to boost metabolism and digestion, which can help aid in weight loss. According to a study published in DMSJournal (Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome), it was found that a diet with moderate to high monounsaturated fat can help with weight loss, “as long as you are not eating more calories than you burn”.

Mustard oil is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are also known to help our body break down fats and boost metabolism. Plus it has a high smoke point which makes it a perfect choice for every day cooking.

While the benefits of mustard oil are many, consultant nutritionist Rupali Dutta says, “There is no specific oil that can aid in weight loss, as they are fats. However, if you want to lose weight and follow a healthy diet Mustard oil (peanut oil, sunflower oil and rice bran oil) can be a good option to consume. However, the cooking oil should be changed to get maximum benefits.”
