Hunger and food insecurity are issues the world is collectively grappling with. Millions of people go hungry every day without eating a single meal. Some citizens are voluntarily giving their contribution for the needy and providing them food and water. An example of this would be Tamil Nadu’s famous M. Kamalathal aka Idli Amma – who cooks and serves idlis to migrant laborers and workers. To make food accessible and affordable to the people, the cost of idli is just Re 1. The heartwarming story of Idli Amma went viral in 2021, with many well-known personalities sharing their admiration for her selfless venture. The video shared by Anand Mahindra garnered over 450k views and 35k likes. The full story of Idli Amma was narrated in the clip. The construction of the house with a special kitchen for Idli Amma was completed on Sunday, 8 May 2022, just in time for Mother’s Day. Industrialist Anand Mahindra shared the news with his followers on Twitter. “Many thanks to our team for completing the house construction on time to gift the Idli Amma on Mother’s Day, she embodies the qualities of a mother: nurturing, caring and selfless. Thank you for supporting her and her work. Good luck being able to. Happy Mother’s Day to all of you,” he wrote in his tweet.

This tweet was originally shared by Anand Mahindra in September 2019. Describing it as a ‘humble’ and ‘impressive’ venture, he had offered to pay for the LPG stove for Idli Amma. Thanks to the backing support, the 80-year-old’s venture not only delivered a gas connection but also a plot of land issued in his name. Click here to read more about it.

Twitter users showered lots of praise and respect for industrialist Anand Mahindra for helping Idli Amma by making her home with a special kitchen.
