The Punjab Police on Friday said it has seized 48 foreign-made pistols and arrested an arms smuggler with alleged links with Pakistan-based terror outfits and pro-Khalistan elements based in the US, UK and Canada.

Senior police officer Dinkar Gupta said the alleged smuggler was acting on the instructions of a US boss.

He said the weapons were meant to carry out terrorist activities in different parts of the country.

Mr Gupta said that an FIR was registered at the Police Station, State Special Operations Cell (SSOC), Amritsar on Thursday night under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code and Arms Act. relation to the case.

He added that further investigation is on to unearth the entire nexus.

Gupta said in a statement that Jagjit Singh alias Jaggu (25) resident of Purian Kalan Police Station Sadar Batala, Thana District Batala was arrested by a team of Punjab Internal Security Wing, SSOC Amritsar from near Kathunangal in Amritsar on Thursday night. issued.

He said, “In an intelligence-led operation, SSOC Amritsar intercepted an I-20 car with registration number PB-06-AN-7016 at a specially placed police checkpoint on Amritsar-Batala road, Kathunangal village. “

The DGP said the team recovered two nylon bags from the car, which contained 48 pistols, magazines and ammunition of various foreign makes and bores.

“The cache includes 19 pistols 9mm (Zigana-made in Turkish), 37 magazines and 45 rounds; 9 pistols of .30 bore (Made in China) and 22 magazines; 19 pistols of .30 bore (Star Mark), 38 magazines and 148 rounds and 1 pistol of 9 mm (Beretta-Italian) and 2 magazines.”

Giving details of the arms smuggling nexus, Gupta said that preliminary investigation has revealed that Jagjit Singh was directed by a former gangster-criminal, Darmanjit Singh alias Darman Kahlon, to collect the consignment of this weapon. I went.

Gupta said, “Jagjit Singh is currently in touch with Darman based in the United States of America. During his stay in Dubai from 2017 to December 2020, Jagjit kept in touch with Darman Kahlon who inspired him to work for him.”

Mr Gupta said that Darmanjit Singh, the alleged mastermind of this smuggling racket, had tasked Jagjit Singh to collect and conceal the consignment of weapons and wait for further instructions for delivery of pistols.

He said that open ended warrants of fugitive criminal Darmanjot Singh have been obtained in Punjab.

“Darmanjot Singh, who originally belonged to Talwandi Khumman village of Thana Kathunangal, Amritsar, was involved in various criminal activities in Punjab before fleeing to the US in 2017 to evade arrest,” Gupta said.

“He helped the infamous gangster Harvinder Singh alias Mannu escape from police custody in 2017. Along with his accomplices, he attacked the police escort party and managed to escape Harvinder Singh alias Mannu.”

Gupta said, “An FIR was registered at Police Station, Civil Lines Batala on June 12, 2017 and in January, 2020 Darman (Darmanjot Singh) was declared a proclaimed offender (PO) by a court in Batala in 2017. “

Mr Gupta said that in 2020, during his stay in the US, Darmanjot Singh funded a criminal group in Punjab with an amount of Rs 2 lakh to purchase illegal weapons to carry out anti-India activities.

He said, “Ten members of his criminal group were arrested by SSOC Amritsar and seven pistols of 32 bore were recovered from their possession. An FIR in this case was registered by Police Station, SSOC Amritsar on November 11, 2020. “

Gupta said that the Punjab Police, which has continuously campaigned against the nefarious designs of Pakistan sponsored terrorist elements who are trying to destabilize peace, communal harmony and the state, has busted 44 terror modules in the last four years. .
