The Shiv Sena on Friday termed the BJP’s celebrations over the induction of Uttar Pradesh leader Jitin Prasada as “fun” but added that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi needs to build a strong team in his party.
In a shot for the BJP on Wednesday, months ahead of the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh due early next year, Prasad, a Congress leader, joined the BJP. The 47-year-old former Union Minister comes from a well-known Brahmin family of UP.
In an editorial in party mouthpiece ‘Saamana’, the Shiv Sena said that Mr Prasad, a youth leader, was of no use to the Congress and would remain for the BJP.
“Jitin Prasad, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Sachin Pilot were young leaders and there were high expectations from them. There is already a void in Congress after the death of Ahmed Patel and Rajiv Satav. It is not good that young leaders are going the BJP’s path. . . ” said the army.
“Prasad, who had suffered a defeat in the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, eventually joined the BJP. Prasad’s family members were Congress loyalists. He was a minister in former prime minister Manmohan Singh’s cabinet. However, he was a member of the Assembly and Lok Sabha Keep losing elections. BJP has now started celebrating his joining. The caste politics of Uttar Pradesh is behind this. The Brahmin vote bank of UP is being seen behind Prasad joining BJP.
“But if Prasad had a hold on Brahmin votes, why were these votes not transferred to the Congress?” it asked.
The Shiv Sena said the traditional upper caste vote of the BJP is moving away from the party.
He said, “Till now, BJP didn’t need any arithmetic or face in UP. Narendra Modi was everything. Ram Mandir or Hindutva were issues of winning votes. But now the situation is so bad that it wants Prasad’s support. ” Sarcastically.
The Uddhav Thackeray-led party said the important issue is why Congress leaders are jumping ship.
Talking about Jyotiraditya Scindia joining BJP and revolt of Sachin Pilot, Shiv Sena said that there is rebellion in Congress in Punjab too.
However, it said the rebellion and factionalism were not confined to the Congress alone.
“Despite Kerala and Assam being in a winning position, the Congress could not do so. It lost Puducherry. But there is no discussion on what the Congress should do next and how it should revive itself.
Except in Maharashtra, Kerala and Karnataka, Congress is fighting for its existence everywhere. This political imbalance is harmful to democracy.”
Congress has done a lot of work before independence and even after it. Contribution of Congress in nation building. Even today the country’s ‘Nehru-Gandhi’ identity cannot be erased… Congress has a strong hold at the grassroots level.
“Congress President Sonia Gandhi has done her job well in the party. Now Rahul Gandhi has to make a strong team, which will be the answer to the challenge before the party,” the Shiv Sena said.
