Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM party expected to contest UP panchayat elections

Asaduddin Owaisi’s party likely to contest upcoming panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh

Baliya:

All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) is likely to enter into an electoral pact with regional organization Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) in the upcoming panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh.

The SBSP, headed by former UP minister Om Prakash Rajbhar, is pursuing smaller and regional parties under the Bhagdari Sankalp Morcha.

“Asaduddin Owaisi’s party candidates are likely to field as joint candidates for the Morcha in the panchayat elections,” Rajbhar told reporters on Wednesday.

He said that the nine constituents of the Morcha will meet in all the 75 district headquarters of the state on January 17.

“After this, a joint rally of the Morcha will be organized. It will be addressed by Mr. Owaisi and other leaders at the front,” he said.

There are a total of 58,758 ‘gram panchayats’ in Uttar Pradesh and several panchayats are prominent.

According to a state government notification, the five-year term of 58,660 ‘gram panchayats’, 88 in Gautam Budh Nagar and 10 in Gonda districts, where the gram panchayat elections were held later, ended on 25 December.

When asked about the Morcha’s stance for the upcoming UP Legislative Council elections, Mr. Rajbhar said, “SBSP will not support BJP.”

The SBSP was part of the BJP-led NDA in the state when Mr. Rajbhar was a minister until he parted with the saffron party after differences with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

The SBSP currently has four MLAs in the 403-member UP Assembly.

The biennial elections to 12 Legislative Council seats in Uttar Pradesh will be held on January 28.

In light of Mr. Rajbhar, UP Minister Shriram Chauhan later told reporters that if Mr. Owaisi contests elections in UP, the BJP will benefit.

“Asaduddin Owaisi has no electoral issues and if he contests, the votes will be split, which will benefit the BJP,” he said.
