Amid Congress protests against high fuel prices in the country, the BJP on Friday said the states where the opposition party is in power should reduce VAT (value added tax) on petrol and diesel prices to provide relief to the people. needed.

Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that Rajasthan, which is ruled by the Congress, is among the states with the highest VAT on fuel prices, noting that it is 26 per cent on diesel compared to 20.2 per cent in Gujarat and 36 per cent on petrol. . 16.6 percent in Haryana.

Quoting Congress, he said, “International crude oil price is in its place. People asking questions to us should reduce VAT in their ruled states. This will bring relief.”

When asked about the protest by the opposition party against rising fuel prices, Mr Prasad said that international crude oil prices play an important role in petrol and diesel prices and added that the international oil prices in India Prices often fell fuel prices have come down.

He recalled that when Congress leader P Chidambaram was the Union Finance Minister, he had said that people can buy petrol and diesel if they can buy ice cream for Rs 20, when he was asked about the higher fuel cost.

Mr Chidambaram made these remarks in 2012 when the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) was in power.

Mr Prasad said the matter demands some sensitivity, given that the country is dependent on imports.

Over 30 Congress workers were detained in Delhi on Friday for protesting at petrol pumps across the city demanding a complete rollback of the hike in fuel prices.

Congress workers held protests in many parts of the country, blaming the Narendra Modi government for the high fuel prices.
