Trinamool’s strategy to stop BJP in Bengal

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is set to welcome former aide Mukul Roy back to the Trinamool (File)

Kolkata:

homecomingMukul Roy’s homecoming is part of Trinamool’s strategy, while the iron is hot.

Objective – To demolish the BJP in Bengal, where it has 18 Lok Sabha MPs, ahead of the 2024 national election, which is just two and a half years away.

To fulfill this objective, and to outline its future course, the Trinamool is keen to capitalize on the anti-BJP sentiment in the state at the moment.

The operation for the prodigy’s return, as it were, was top secret. Both the Trinamool and the allureees have kept silence.

Senior Roy will not be the only one to return to the Trinamool; His son, Subhranshu Roy – a former Trinamool MLA who joined the BJP, contested and lost – is also present at the Trinamool Bhavan in Kolkata and is likely to rejoin the party.

The Trinamool is also encouraging the return of others, including former minister Rajiv Banerjee and former Uttarpara MLAs Prabir Ghoshal and Malda’s Sarla Murmu, even though all three lost in their respective electoral races.

Some sitting BJP MLAs are also likely to return to motherhood.

Sources say that the party wants to break a large section of the BJP, which could possibly be bigger than the piece that the BJP broke before the elections.

The Trinamool is actively wooing Mukul Roy.

Mamata Banerjee also hinted at this at a public rally ahead of the assembly elections, where she said: “Mukul Roy is not as bad as Suvendu Adhikari”.

Mr. Adhikari is, of course, the newest high-profile ex-Trinamool recruit in the BJP; An ex-Mamata Banerjee ally, in which the opposition has invested heavily in hopes of a landslide election victory.

Unfortunately for the BJP, her personal victory over Ms Banerjee from Nandigram was the only bright spot in an otherwise disastrous outing.

Last week Abhishek Banerjee – Ms Banerjee’s nephew and the new Trinamool general secretary – visited the hospital where Mr Roy’s wife is being treated for COVID-19. Mr Roy and Mr Banerjee had not been face-to-face in the past, and their journey was a headline-maker.

Mr. Banerjee also met Mr. Roy’s son Subhranshu at the hospital. After that meeting, Subhranshu Roy expressed eloquence about Abhishek Banerjee’s gesture.

Bengal BJP chief Dilip Ghosh also went to the hospital – after Abhishek Banerjee visited and after reports top BJP leaders called Mukul Roy to question his wife – but it seemed it was too late.
