A 17-year-old girl from Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria district was allegedly murdered for hours between Monday evening and Tuesday night after her body was thrown from the bridge by the girl’s grandfather and two uncles. Although the police have not on record why the girl was killed, an aunt has said that the accused had problems with the girl’s ‘lifestyle’.
Gore videos shot by passersby on Tuesday showed the girl’s body hanging from a railing on the bridge, posing as a policeman and a local attempt to retrieve it. Another video shows senior police officers inspecting the area.
Reports said that the girl and her mother had recently come to live at their in-laws’ house in Deoria. The girl’s father is a migrant laborer in Punjab.
“These people always had problems with the lifestyle of the girl and her family. They were jealous of what the family ate, what they were wearing. They attacked the girl with a rod. When she became serious, they hit the mother. Told that they were taking the girl to the hospital, but instead threw her off the bridge on the way to the hospital,” an aunt of the girl told reporters.
Deoria police chief Shripati Mishra said in a video statement that the police were investigating.
“The girl had an argument with her grandfather and abused him. Then 2-3 of the girl’s uncles beat her up, and she fainted. Relatives were taking her to the hospital, but she died on the way They tried to dump his body, but it got stuck on the river bridge, Mr. Mishra said.
Reports said that the girl’s grandfather has been arrested while the accused uncle is still absconding.
