Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) reported on Sunday umpiring the umpiring holder against the Delhi Capital in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match, sources in the Punjab franchise confirmed. The side has reported a wrong call by umpire Nitin Menon to him due to a decision error and the matter will now be addressed by match referee Javagal Srinath.
Sources in KXIP told ANI on Monday, “The umpire’s decision was shocking and this call cost us the game. We have now reported the matter to the match referee. We will see what the referee’s decision is.”
Earlier today, it was confirmed that KXIP captain KL Rahul has the right to bring Menon’s umpiring error to the notice of the match referee. Once the matter reaches the match referee, the IPL Governing Council (GC) will look to defeat KXIP in their opening game against Delhi Capital at the Dubai Cricket Stadium on Sunday.
Talking to ANI, an IPL GC official said that the Punjab franchise has the authority to report the matter and it will then be taken up for evaluation. He said these kinds of mistakes are certainly not “good advertising” for the game.
The official said, “The process is that the team reports the case through the captain and the team manager. After that, we assess it as the Governing Council. The match referee also states in his report where he mentions Could, ”the official said.
“Whether it would have changed, it is difficult to say what happened because the strike would have changed and Mayank was hitting the ball vigorously and the change of strike could have been out of that gear.”
The incident took place in the 19th over of KXIP’s chase When Aggarwal played a shot and took two runs. However, on-field umpire Menon singled it out.
Both teams scored 157 runs in the scheduled 20 overs and Delhi Capital won the match in the super over.
Former cricketer Virender Sehwag, who has himself represented KXIP in the league, tweeted that the umpire’s call made a difference in the match and that he should be “man of the match”.
