Burkina Faso captain Bertrand Traere has denounced the Africa Cup of Nations as “a scam” coronavirus testing procedures until five players and coach Kamau Malo tested positive in Sunday’s opener against hosts Cameroon. The Aston Villa forward told a news conference in Yaounde on Saturday: “It is a scam, we cannot be denied the first players of the team 24 hours before the match.” Assistant coach Firmin Sanou, standing in for Malo, said: “We have four or five Covid cases, mainly first-team players, we are not going to name.”

“It’s all questionable, but we have confidence in the players who will replace them,” continued Sanou, who hit out at the organization with two different medical teams to test the team.

“Yesterday morning (Friday) a medical team came to our hotel for tests, when we tried to understand who sent them, the CAF (Confederation of African Football) clearly told us that they had not sent them. We refused to do the test,” Sanou said.

“Another team arrived at 10 pm, apparently the CAF team, we did tests which gave us 4 to 5 cases of covid.

“I say 4 or 5 because they say our first tested player didn’t test…” he continued.

The Burkinabe delegation is disputing the fact that the tests were not PCR tests, which should be done 48 hours before the match, and have requested a second opinion.

Trare said: “The authorities must review the organization. We cannot accept this decision. We can re-test our positive players.”
