“Bit Of Andrew Symonds”: Ricky Ponting Names IPL Star Who “Can Win You A World Cup”

The selection headache takes center stage with teams gearing up for the T20 World Cup to be played in Australia in October-November this year. Meanwhile, defending champions Aussies will be worried about defending their title that too at home. As the discussions on the team selection for the mega event continue to grow, former Australia captain Ricky Ponting feels that Tim David should also find a place in the hosts’ squad.

Notably, Singapore-born cricketer, Tim David, is the third highest run-scorer in the T20 format this year with 1002 runs. The power-hitter has scored with a strike rate of 183.51. Meanwhile, his strike rate in the Indian Premier League this year remained above 200.

“If I were a selector, I would have loved to have someone like that in my team,” Ponting was quoted as saying by Cricket Australia.

“He’s an out and out match winner… he’s the kind of player who can really win you the World Cup, he’s not just the average run of the mill man that just a team can get into,” he said.

Stating that he sees a glimpse of late Australia all-rounder Andrew Symonds in David, Ponting claimed that the Singapore-born has been the best performer for Australia in the middle order in the last two years.

“He really reminds me of Andrew Symonds in the 2003 (ODI) World Cup,” Ponting said.

“You know if you bring them in and give them a chance they’re going to win a tournament for you.

“That’s how I look at him right now and I know there are some other quality players in the middle order for Australia, but probably none of them are as good as Tim in the last two years,” he added.
