Amid Virat Kohli’s struggles in Test cricket, former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting has backed the star batsman to replicate his white-ball resurgence in the longest format of the game. Kohli, who ended his three-year-long century drought last year during the Asia Cup, has scored just 111 runs in five innings in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. Ponting feels that “champions always find a way”, adding that he is confident that Kohli will be at his best very soon.
“As for Kohli, I have said that champion players always find a way. He may be in a bit of a drought at the moment, he may not be scoring the runs that we all expect from him, but he is a realistic Yes. Good. When you are a batsman and you are struggling and not getting runs, you yourself are well aware of it.
Speaking on the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Ponting said that it would be hard to judge any batsman based on this series, labeling the pitches as “an absolute nightmare”.
“I’m not looking at anyone’s form in the series because it’s been an absolute nightmare for the batsmen. Australia did a remarkable job by turning around in those first two Tests and coming back to win the third. We all know that batting Has been so good. It is incredibly difficult. And it is not because of the turn but also because of the uneven bounce that makes you lose confidence in the wicket and if that happens then you are guessing all the time who is going to bat. Makes it really difficult.”
Kohli’s form will once again be under question in the fourth and final Test between India and Australia starting on March 9.
