With Virat Kohli stepping down as India’s Test captaincy, former cricketer Gautam Gambhir feels the 33-year-old should focus on scoring runs, which he called “more important”. Gambhir said that “Captaincy is not one’s birthright”, explaining that MS Dhoni also gave his captaincy and played under Virat Kohli. Speaking on Star Sports’ game plan show, the former India opener said, “What else do you want to see? I don’t know. I think captaincy is not anyone’s birthright. People like MS Dhoni have made Virat Kohli proud. Has given the command of his captaincy. He has also played under Virat Kohli. He has also won three ICC trophies, three or four IPL trophies.”

Kohli resigned from the post after India’s 1-2 loss to South Africa in the three-match Test series. He had already given up the T20I captaincy after the T20 World Cup and was soon dropped from the ODI captaincy. In December last year, the BCCI had named Rohit Sharma as the full-time captain of India.

Elaborating further on Kohli’s role with the national team, Gambhir said, “I think Virat Kohli should score runs and that is more important. When you dream of playing for India, you become the captain. You don’t dream of winning, you dream of winning. Nothing else changes the game for India.”

He added, “Except you don’t go there to toss and set the field placement. But your energy and intensity should remain the same because it is an honor to play for your country.”

India is to face South Africa in a three-match ODI series from January 19. Due to the absence of Rohit Sharma, Kohli will play under KL Rahul, who is the stand-in captain.
