Indian wrestler Divya Kakran clinched a bronze medal in the women’s freestyle 68kg at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 by defeating Tiger Lily Cocker Lemali of Tonga at the Coventry Arena Wrestling Mat B here on Friday. Kakran defeated Lemali 2-0 in the bronze medal match. Kakran won the medal via victory by fall in just 26 seconds. The fifth wrestling medal of the day pushes the medal tally for India to 25 in Birmingham 2022.
The Indian wrestler was in good form in this match. Kakran managed to hold her own and kept her opponent away from the bronze medal.
It was a one-sided affair where Kakran put on the best of his wrestling skills to defeat Lemali in the fall.
Earlier, star Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia won the gold medal for India in men’s 65kg by winning the final against Canada’s Lachlan McNeil.
Deepak Punia won the gold medal by defeating Pakistan’s Muhammad Inam 3-0 in the men’s freestyle 86kg final.
Anshu Malik had to settle for a silver medal in the women’s 57kg freestyle wrestling event at the Commonwealth Games 2022 after losing to Nigeria’s Odunayo Folasade Adekuroye.
The Commonwealth Games 2022 will begin in Birmingham from 28 July to 8 August.
