Commonwealth Games: Poornima Pandey 6th in +87kg weightlifting

Indian weightlifter Poornima Pandey finished a disappointing sixth in the women’s 87kg event at the Commonwealth Games on Wednesday. Pandey only managed two lifts, which is the minimum required to register a total in the NEC for a total of 228 kg (103 by 125 kg). In his last two clean and jerk attempts of 133kg, the barbell slipped out of his hands before completing the clean.

Local favorite Emily Campbell broke Games records in the snatch and total lift as she lifted 286 kg (124 kg (162 kg) to claim the gold medal.

He also set Commonwealth records in clean and jerk and total lift.


Samoa’s Feigaga Stowers won the silver medal in 268 kg (121 kg 147 kg), while Australian Karishma Amo Tarrant lifted the 239 kg (100 kg 139 kg) bronze medal.

Indian lifters have won nine medals including three gold in this edition.
