CWG 2022: India lose 1-3 to England in Women’s Hockey Pool A match

The Indian women’s hockey team lost 3-1 against England in a Pool A match at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham on Tuesday. Gisele Ainsley (3′), Tess Howard (40′), Hannah Martin (53′) finds the back of the net for England. Vandana Kataria (60′) was the only scorer for India. The England team started the game on an aggressive manner and scored a consecutive penalty corner in the second minute of the first quarter. Gisele Ainsley converted a second penalty corner and helped England lead 1-0 in the third minute. Soon after, Salima Tete scored a brilliant run in the right flank but she could not find the back of the net.

Tete bowled a brilliant delivery in the 12th minute and Vandana Katariya tried to get the ball into the goal, but English goalkeeper Madeleine Hinch made a brilliant save. India got a penalty corner in the last minute of the first quarter. However, Gurjit Kaur did not get a match.

Monica took a shot in the opening minutes of the second quarter, but unfortunately the ball went over the crossbar. The Indian team scored another goal in the 20th minute, but the English defense unit held on and kept their opponents away. The Indians continued to build pressure and got a penalty corner in the 22nd minute.

Deep Grace Ekka took a strong shot, but goalkeeper Hinch made another brilliant save. Navneet Kaur helped India get another penalty corner in the 25th minute, but Gurjeet could not break the English defence. The Indians kept trying to level up, but England managed to maintain their lead at the end of the first half.

Elena Reyer scored a remarkable run through the center in the opening minutes of the third quarter, but Udita made a fine tackle and ensured that the English side did not extend their lead.

England picked up the pace and scored another goal in the 38th minute, but the Indian defense unit fought hard and kept the ball away from their target. However, Sophie Hamilton produced a fine ball and Tess Howard deflected it into goal in the 40th minute to help England lead 2-0. India scored two penalty corners in the final minutes of the third quarter but could not find the back of the net.

Tete took a shot in the 48th minute, but the goalkeeper pushed the ball away from goal. Soon after, the Indians earned a penalty corner, but the English defense remained strong and maintained a clean sheet.

Hannah Martin converted a penalty corner in the 53rd minute to help England extend their lead 3–0. In the final minute of the match, India received a penalty corner and Vandana Katariya tapped the ball into the goal to ensure that England did not leave the field with a clean sheet.
