CWG wrestling venue in Birmingham vacated after security alert

In a shameful incident for the organisers, wrestling bouts at the Commonwealth Games had to be halted and spectators were asked to vacate the hall after a speaker fell from the ceiling minutes after the first session began. Only five bouts could be completed when a mat, used to relay the announcement, fell near the speaker, raising security issues at Seventhie Stadium and the arena on the opening day of wrestling competitions.

This was right after India’s Deepak Punia’s victory in the opening bout of 86kg.

The gathered fans were asked to evacuate and a thorough investigation was ordered by the organisers, who decided to restart the season at 12:45 local time.

“All are safe, they are re-checking the entire system to avoid any untoward incident,” said a coach.
