A day after making a shocking announcement of his retirement from ODIs, Ben Stokes stepped out at his home ground in Durham to play his final match of the format as England beat South Africa in the first match of their series. Stokes, who was England’s hero in the 2019 World Cup final victory and through the campaign in general, said it was “untenable” for him to play in all three formats and hence he pulled out of ODIs. Stokes dismissed the England team as soon as he landed on the field.

The star all-rounder appeared visibly emotional as the crowd at Chester-le-Street extended a warm welcome to him.

England’s newly appointed white-ball captain Jos Buttler came up to him and gave him a quick hug before moving to his place behind the stumps.

In the first ODI, South Africa won the toss and decided to bat first.

Stokes on Monday announced that this will be his last match in the format.

This has been an incredibly difficult decision to make. I have loved every minute of playing for England with my teammates. “We have had an incredible journey along the way,” Stokes said in his statement.

“As difficult as this decision was, it’s not that hard to deal with the fact that I can’t give my 100% in this format to my teammates anymore. Nothing less than an England shirt-wearer. Three formats are untenable for me right now Not only do I feel that my body is letting me down because of the schedule and what is expected of us, but I also feel like I am replacing another player that Jose and the rest of the team do all of them,” They said.

While Stokes is England’s Test captain, he also said that he will continue to play T20Is.
