Federer, who last played in Wimbledon after losing to Poland’s Hubert Herkaz, is currently recovering from knee surgery.
He withdrew from the Tokyo Olympics and the US Open after suffering a knee injury during the summer campaign.
“During the grass court season, I unfortunately suffered a blow with my knee, and I have accepted that I will have to withdraw from the Tokyo Olympic Games. I am very disappointed, because it has been an honor and highlight of my career when I have also represented Switzerland,” he posted on his Instagram account while withdrawing from the Olympics.
He later announced in August that he would be out for the rest of the season.
“I will be on crutches for several weeks and out of the game for several months,” the 20-time Grand Slam said in a video posted on Instagram.
“I’m a realist, don’t get me wrong. I know how difficult it is to have another surgery at my age. I’ll try it. I want to be healthy, I want to run around,” he said.
