Germany’s shock defeat to Japan at the World Cup sparks a meme fest on Twitter

Japan made a comeback after beating four-time champions Germany by one goal in their Group E match of the ongoing FIFA World Cup on Wednesday. Ilkay Gundogan put Germany ahead from the penalty spot in the 33rd minute at the Khalifa International Stadium. However, strikes from Ritsu Doan and Takuma Asano in the second half left the Germans scratching their heads as Japan topped Group E 2–1 ahead of the match between Spain and Costa Rica. After Japan stunned Germany, football fans flooded social media with funny memes.

Notably, this is the second major upset in the ongoing tournament after Saudi Arabia stunned Argentina on Tuesday.
Germany were eliminated from the 2018 World Cup in the group stage after losing to South Korea in their final game.
