Chennai Super Kings have already qualified for the IPL 2021 playoffs and captain MS Dhoni’s leadership is being lauded for this turn in the team’s fortunes. But Dhoni’s lack of form with the bat is something that has gone unnoticed. He has failed to make any significant contribution with the bat and is being questioned whether he should retain himself before next year’s mega auction.
Former South African pacer Dale Steyn was asked a question about Dhoni’s CSK future on ESPNCricinfo’s ‘Polite Inquiry’.
“Do you think MS Dhoni will sustain himself for CSK next year considering his current form?” This question was asked by a Twitter user. To this Steyn replied that Dhoni can come back on the field if he can lead his team to the title.
“He is the boss of Chennai. When you think of Chennai, you think of MS Dhoni. And you know what? They have a few games left and they are almost in the final. But we have Dhoni Haven’t seen anything done. If he scores the winning run in the final, you can guarantee he will pick up the gloves for Chennai in next year’s IPL,” Steyn said.
MS Dhoni scored 200 runs in IPL 2020, which was his worst season in the history of the league. His team also endured their worst outing ever, as they finished 7th on the points table to miss a play-off spot for the first time. Dhoni is doing even worse as a batsman this time around, but he has managed to pull his team up through his impeccable leadership skills and man-management qualities.
CSK were the first team to qualify for the playoffs in IPL 2021 after dominating the opening fixtures of the UAE leg and looked in great shape for the play-offs with their batsmen and bowlers firing on all cylinders. Dhoni’s own form and veteran Suresh Raina’s form are the main concerns but both of them are experienced cricketers who can be relied upon on the big stage.
