India finish as group toppers in mixed team badminton quarterfinals in Asia

Star shuttlers PV Sindhu and HS Prannoy won their respective singles matches as India defeated Malaysia to storm into the quarter-finals of the Asia Mixed Team Badminton Championships as group toppers in Dubai on Thursday. Prannoy opened proceedings for India in their final Group B match and came up short against world No. 4 Zi Jia Li before defeating his opponent 18-21 21-13 25-23 in a men’s singles match that lasted one hour and 10 minutes. In contrast, Sindhu took just 34 minutes to beat lower-ranked Ling Ching Wong 21-13, 21-17 in the women’s singles to give India a 2-0 lead.
But the men’s doubles pair of Dhruv Kapila and Chirag Shetty went down 16-21 10-21 to Aaron Chia and Soe Woo Yik, giving Malaysia a 1-2 lead.
Tressa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand beat Commonwealth Games champions Pearly Tan and Thinah Murlidharanto 23-21 21-15 to give India a 3-1 winning lead. India had earlier thrashed Kazakhstan and United Arab Emirates 5–0 each in their first two group matches.
