New Zealand captain Kane Williamson will miss the second and final Test against India in Mumbai due to a recurrence of his left elbow injury, which has plagued him this year. Tom Latham will lead the team in place of Williamson, who has been battling a tendon injury since it first emerged in New Zealand’s home summer. Coach Gary Stead confirmed the injury had aggravated during the first Test in Kanpur and called for the captain’s ouster for failing to improve in the days following the match. “It’s been a really tough time for Kane dealing with this kind of persistent injury,” Stead said.

“While we have been able to manage the injury through the year and the T20 World Cup, the change in Test cricket and the increasing batting load has put his elbows in again.

He added, “Ultimately the injury is still not healing and when he went through the Kanpur Test, it was clear that playing the second Test was not an option.”

Stead informed that Williamson would require continued rest.

“It’s been a challenging year for Kane trying to manage his elbow and it’s important that we work out a good plan with him now to make sure the injury doesn’t bother him.

“He will likely need sustained periods of rest, followed by rehabilitation, strengthening and a gradual bat load.”
