Delhi Capitals are just one win away from sealing a play-off berth in IPL 2021 and if they do, it will be the third season the Ricky Ponting-coached franchise makes it to the last four. The franchise, formerly known as Delhi Daredevils, has been improving rapidly and reached their maiden IPL final last season, eventually losing to Mumbai Indians in the summit clash. The team scaled new heights under the leadership of young Shreyas Iyer. But the middle-order batsman was ruled out of the opening phase of the season, which was played in India in April-May, due to a shoulder injury. In his absence, wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant was assigned the top job and the flamboyant batsman responded in style to take the team to the top spot, before the league was suspended due to the devastating second wave of Covid-19 in India. this year.
The league resumed in the UAE earlier this month and this has given Iyer a chance to return to the team after regaining fitness. The franchise, however, decided to continue with Pant as captain for the rest of the season and the performance has been as good as in the first half. On Tuesday, Delhi had a chance to make it to the play-offs but losing to Kolkata Knight Riders meant they would have to wait longer.
Captain Rishabh Pant scored 39 runs in a row against KKR and in the middle he broke the long-standing record of former DC captain and Team India legend Virender Sehwag. Sehwag was the highest run-scorer for the franchise for a long time, scoring 2382 runs in 85 innings. Pant on Tuesday surpassed Sehwag and now leads the charts with 2390 runs from 75 innings. Pant has so far scored a century and 14 fifties for the franchise. Sehwag scored a century and 17 fifties during his stay in DC.
Shreyas Iyer is currently third with 2291 runs for the franchise in 82 innings. But the man who has been in terrific form since joining the franchise is Shikhar Dhawan. The veteran opener, who spent most of his IPL career at Sunrisers Hyderabad, returned to DC a few seasons ago and has been in a rage ever since.
Dhawan is currently ranked fourth, having scored 1933 runs in just 58 innings for the franchise at an average of 40.27. The DC team management will be hoping that the trio of Dhawan, Iyer and Pant can fire on all cylinders in the rest of the tournament and guide the franchise to their maiden IPL title.
