Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting believes Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant are capable enough batsmen to pick themselves in the same playing XI during the upcoming T20 World Cup. In his latest ICC review, Ponting did his five face-offs for the marquee event and among them there was a heated debate as to who should be in the playing XI? Should it be Pant or the “designated finisher” of the bowling attack’s potential destroyer. “Karthik?
Ponting wrote, “There has been a long debate in Indian cricket circles as to who should be the designated wicketkeeper-batsman in the team. While Karthik can lay claim to being an excellent finisher, Pant’s prodigious talent has seen him endorsed by many. ” his pillar.
India have fielded both in the same team on a few occasions and Ponting believes that should be the way for Rohit Sharma’s team.
Praising both, Ponting said: “I really think they are both the best players in India’s team. I don’t care if they are both keepers but I think their batting is good enough.”
Elaborating on his abilities, the Australian legend said: “With Rishabh in the middle order and Dinesh as the finisher, they look extremely dangerous to me.”
Ultimately though, Ponting believed that Pant has the edge over Karthik and is likely to be given more chances.
Pant’s Delhi Capitals coach said, “Look, I’m just going to go for Rishabh’s side because I think he might get a little more opportunity than Dinesh.”
