Newcastle United announced on Friday they have signed Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid, with the England international becoming the first arrival under the club’s new Saudi-led ownership. The 31-year-old full-back has moved back into the Premier League for an undisclosed fee, which is understood to be worth more than £12 million ($16 million) in add-ons. The former Tottenham defender has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract and his arrival marks the start of a new era under Eddie Howe, who was appointed as manager in November.

“Newcastle United are pleased to confirm the signing of England full-back Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid for an undisclosed fee,” the club said in a statement.

“The 31-year-old has agreed a two-and-a-half-year deal and has become the first senior signer under club owners and head coach Eddie Howe.”

Trippier said he is enjoying his return to England from Spain.

He said: “I am delighted to be joining this wonderful club. I really enjoyed my time at Madrid, but when I learned of interest from Newcastle United, and had previously worked with Eddie Howe, I knew this was where I wanted to be.

“I know we have a lot of work ahead of us, but I know very well the demands of the Premier League and I know it’s an amazing club with a lot of talented players. I can’t wait to get started. “

Newcastle face a struggle to stay in the Premier League. They are only one rung down the table after a single win in the entire season.
