Six-time world champion MC Mary Kom will not participate in the upcoming National Women’s Boxing Championship to be held in Hisar. The 38-year-old, who arrived in the pre-quarters of the Tokyo Olympics before losing to a tough bout, is however, training for the World Championships in December. Even though the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has announced that only gold medalists from the Nationals will join the team, it is reliably learned that trials can be held in certain weight categories, including the 48kg division, which Mary Kom will do it. I like to compete.
The national championship will be held in Hisar from October 21. Olympic bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain (69kg) has been given direct selection for the world event based on her Tokyo performance. She will also skip the domestic showpiece.
Multiple-time Asian gold medalist Mary Kom has not competed since the Tokyo Games and a federation source said she would have given the nationals a shot if the World Championship selection was announced sooner.
The BFI’s decision to select only national gold winners for the World Championships was announced on 5 October.
“If she had known about this earlier, she would have competed. She would have prepared accordingly,” the federation said.
The other two Tokyo Olympians, Simranjit Kaur (60kg) and Pooja Rani (75kg), will compete at the national level.
The Women’s Boxing World Championships will be held in Istanbul in early December and are due to begin in Belgrade, Serbia on 24 October, offering a total prize money of USD 2.6 million marked for the men’s event.
