Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday lauded Anshu Malik and Sarita Mor for their stellar performances at the World Wrestling Championships. Sarita Mor won the bronze while Anshu Malik became the first Indian woman to participate in the finals of the World Championships. Anshu lost to Helen Lucie Marouli in the final in the gold medal bout in Oslo, Norway on Thursday. “Congratulations @OLyAnshu and @saritamor3 for winning the bronze for winning silver at the World Wrestling Championships 2021. Best wishes to these outstanding athletes for their future endeavours,” the PM wrote on Twitter.

Anshu, 19, took a 1-0 lead in the gold medal bout at the break, but her Rio 2016 gold medalist gave the Indian team a 2-1 lead.

Marauli managed to hold on to the lead and got another point by twisting Anshu to extend her lead to 3-1.

The American then placed Anshu’s back on the mat and the referee awarded the match to Marauli via a fall.

Before Anshu’s silver, Indian women had won five bronze medals in the marquee tournament.

Alka Tomar (2006) Geeta Phogat (2012), Babita Phogat (2012), Pooja Dhanda (2018) and Vinesh Phogat (2019) won bronze medals.

In the 59kg category, Sarita Mor defeated Johanna Lindborg of Sweden 8-2 in the bronze medal bout.
