Steve Bruce is set to lead Newcastle’s first game under their new Saudi bosses despite reports that he will be sacked ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Tottenham. The £305 million ($418 million) acquisition, which was completed last week, ended deeply unpopular sportswear tycoon Mike Ashley’s 14-year reign. Bruce said he wanted to remain in the Newcastle hot-seat but admitted he could be replaced, with former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard and former Borussia Dortmund manager Lucien Favre among bookies’ favorites for the job.

However, the club issued an operation notice on Thursday saying the former Manchester United defender would attend a media briefing on Friday.

Newcastle moved to second place from bottom of the Premier League in Sunday’s match, without a win in their first seven matches.

The takeover was rubber-stamped by the Premier League after receiving legally binding assurances that Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which holds an 80 percent stake in the club, was not acting on behalf of the kingdom’s government.

This is despite the fact that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is the chairman of the PIF board.
