Ravi Bishnoi says he would “love to bowl” with this spin sensation
Indian leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi expressed his desire to bowl in partnership with Afghanistan’s star bowler Rashid Khan to learn how to bowl. Bishnoi’s rise from U19 to senior has been rapid. In an exclusive interview on Sports Over the Top on Sports18, the Rajasthan player opens up about his journey to become the leg-spinner that he is. Bishnoi, who idolized Anil Kumble, recalls, “I started out as a medium-pacer but switched to leg-spin and developed interest and enjoyed the art of leg-spin. At that time I took cricket seriously. started taking it.” and Shane Warne.
A newbie in Team India, Bishnoi’s debut against West Indies earned him the Man of the Match award. He took two wickets for 17 runs from his quota of four overs. Since then he has taken 16 wickets in ten matches. His scintillating performance against Pakistan in the 2022 Asia Cup won him accolades but he just missed out on the 2022 T20 World Cup. He is not included in India’s final squad, but is traveling for the competition as a reserve.
The 22-year-old further credited his parents and those who supported him in his early days as a budding cricketer.
“My two coaches have supported me throughout the journey, and they have been my backbone. In the early days, my parents were very supportive but in Indian culture, it is believed that there is no scope in sports. After a few years when my coaches told him about my potential, he started supporting me,” Bishnoi said.
The Jodhpur-born player was the highest wicket-taker in the 2020 U19 World Cup, soon after which he got a handsome IPL contract with Punjab Kings. He kept his economy at 6.96 in 23 matches and took the wicket of Rishabh Pant on his debut against Delhi Capitals in September 2020.
Bishnoi shared, “I will always remember that moment because as a youngster you always dream of it, and the first wicket is always memorable so I will always cherish that moment.”
Since then, he has emerged as one of the top leg-spinners in the IPL, which also propelled him into the senior reckoning.
“IPL has supported me a lot, because in age group cricket everyone is the same age or maybe younger, but in IPL there is no age limit, senior players, international players so when you share the dressing you have to Get to learn a lot. Room with these players and you get to bowl to many legends,” Bishnoi said.
While he has partnered with Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel, the 22-year-old wants to partner with Rashid Khan. “It was fun to bowl with Yuzvendra Chahal because you know he is one of the top 5 spinners right now. If I am lucky, I would love to bowl with Rashid Khan because I have to learn to bowl in partnerships.” Bishnoi said.
The spinner was part of the Indian team in the recent Asia Cup match against Pakistan, where he finished with figures of 1/26 in his four overs.
