With Australia needing just 76 runs on the third day of the third Test against India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the hosts needed an early breakthrough. Experienced spinner Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed Usman Khawaja on the second ball of the day. Ashwin bowled a fuller ball close to the off stump. Khawaja, who came forward to defend, fainted from the outside edge. The Indians appealed in unison and the umpire gave out. Though Khawaja went for review but the decision was unchanged as there was a spike on ultraage.

Australia began their innings on the second day at 156/4, with Peter Handscomb (7*) and Cameron Green (6*) unbeaten. But the pair of Ravichandran Ashwin (3/44) and fast bowler Umesh Yadav (3/12) brought such a cocktail of spin and pace into the game that Australia lost their remaining six wickets within 41 runs and were bowled out for 197. Went.
After being bowled out for 88, Team India had their work cut out for them to survive against the Aussie spinners and build up a formidable total. But in the end, the hosts’ batting lineup was brought to its knees by Nathan Lyon, who took eight for 64. Matthew Kuhnmann and Mitchell Starc also took a wicket each.
India were bundled out for 163 and Cheteshwar Pujara (59) was the only one who opposed Australia’s strategy. The hosts walked away from the field with a modest lead of 75 runs, setting a target of 76 runs for Australia.
But India will surely take relief from the fact that the pitch is difficult to bat on and the spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja are in good touch. Apart from this, Umesh can also repeat his first innings heroics. Together, the Indian bowling will have to pull together a total defense that can rewrite the record books.
