Real Madrid lost 2-1 at Espanyol on Sunday as Carlo Ancelotti’s side dealt a shock to the Champions League with their first Liga defeat of the season. Real, who lost to Moldovan Sheriff Tiraspol on Tuesday, blew their chance to overtake Atletico Madrid, who beat crisis-hit Barcelona 2-0 on Saturday to level their city rivals on 17 points. Ancelotti said Real had played “our worst match of the season”. “I agree, we played poorly,” said the Italian coach.
“Now we need to use the international break to think about why the attitude of this team has changed in the span of a week.”
Espanyol took the lead in the 17th minute at the RCDE Stadium in Catalonia when Raul de Tomas found the net.
Alex Vidal scored the second goal after beating Nacho and hitting Real’ keeper Thibaut Courtois in 15 minutes in the second half.
The defeat leaves Real without a win in three games after being held to a goalless draw by Villarreal in their last league match.
Karim Benzema put the ball into the net at the start of the second half but was dismissed for Luka Jovic.
As Espanyol again appeared about to extend their advantage, Benzema pulled back a goal in 71 minutes, his ninth league goal in eight games this season after the Frenchman collected a pass from Jovic in the bottom. Shot in the corner.
Espanyol won just once in seven matches this season, but they hung badly in five minutes of extra time to take all three points.
