The star pair of Sajan Prakash and Srihari Natraj will lead a four-member Indian swimming team at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games next month. Besides Prakash and Natraj, fast-rising Delhi swimmer Kushagra Rawat and Madhya Pradesh’s Advaita Page will make their debut at the quadrennial event in Birmingham, UK from 28 July to 8 August. The Swimming Federation of India (SFI) had secured four quota places for the 2022 CWG and the national body announced that swimmers who finished sixth in their respective events from the 2018 Gold Coast CWG would be considered for the quota slot. . SFI Secretary General Monal Chokshi said, “Sreehari, Sajan, Advaita and Kushagra have finished sixth from the last Commonwealth Games in the one-year qualification period. This cut-off standard is set by SFI.”
The veteran Prakash will be on the hunt for India’s first medal in the 200m butterfly event, for which he finished sixth.
In addition, he will also compete in the 50m and 100m butterfly events, which will be his third CWG campaign.
Natraj, on the other hand, will compete in the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke events. This will be the Bengaluru swimmer’s first big-ticket event after the Tokyo Olympics as the 21-year-old missed the ongoing World Championships in Budapest.
Kushagra and Advait have qualified for the 1500m freestyle event. The former will also compete in the 200m and 400m freestyle.
The swimming events will be held from July 29 to August 3.
India has not got any medal in able swimming in the Commonwealth Games so far.
Paraswimmer Prashant Karmakar’s 50m freestyle bronze at the 2010 edition in New Delhi is India’s only CWG medal in the sport.
