Sevilla remained in touch with Real Madrid at the top of La Liga on Sunday after a Rafa Mir goal helped Getafe win 1-0 at home. Meir’s flick finish in the 22nd minute put David Soria behind and was enough for Sevilla to reduce Madrid’s gap to five points, with Sevilla a game in hand. Madrid beat Valencia 4-1 on Saturday. With Real Madrid playing in Saudi Arabia in this week’s Spanish Super Cup, Sevilla will have a chance to close the gap to two points when they beat Valencia next weekend.
Julen Lopetefui’s side appears to be the main challenger for Real Madrid this season, with Atletico Madrid and Barcelona both well ahead. Sevilla are now unbeaten in six matches in all competitions.
Getafe, who finished 16th, was undone by a driving run from Luis Ocampos, who defeated both Florentino Luis and Jonathan Silva before firing at low cross.
Mir flicks the ball behind his standing leg and to Soria’s surprise, the goalkeeper lets the ball crawl through his hands and inside the post.
