Opener Ishan Kishan was in fine form in the five-match T20 International (T20I) series against South Africa, and finished as the highest run-scorer in the competition with 206 runs. Kishan hit two half-centuries and batted at a strike rate of 150.36 in the series. However, during India’s visit for the 2022 T20 World Cup in October-November, when first-choice openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul are set to make a comeback in the team, their chances of making it to the playing XI are slim.

Rohit, who is also the captain, has been rested for the South Africa series after KL Rahul was ruled out due to injury.

Speaking during the 5th T20I in Bengaluru, legendary Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar said that the ideal opening partnership in the T20 World Cup would be Rohit and Rahul.

When asked about India’s ideal opening partnership in the World Cup, Gavaskar said, “I think if KL Rahul is fit, then KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma will have the opening combination.”

Former South Africa captain Graeme Smith echoed Gavaskar’s point of view and asked why Kishan, despite his stellar form, would not be able to outdo the two stalwarts in India’s team.

“I would go with Sunny too. I think they are two great openers. People might be talking about Ishan Kishan, but I think KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma have done business consistently and top India There will be two excellent batsmen. Order there,” Smith said.

Ishan Kishan will, of course, get more chances to push his case when India travel to Ireland for the two-match T20I series.
