Sudhir wins gold in men’s heavyweight para powerlifting: Here’s how the world reacted



India’s para powerlifter Sudhir created a Commonwealth Games record for winning a gold medal in the men’s heavyweight final. After lifting 208 kg in his first attempt, Sudhir took the lead with 212 kg in his second attempt. Despite failing to attempt 217kg in his third and final attempt, Sudhir went on to win the gold medal, and also set a Games record with his total of 134.5 points. This was India’s seventh gold in the ongoing Commonwealth Games. People from all walks of life took to Twitter to praise Sudhir for winning the gold medal.

“Great start to the CWG 2022 Para-Sports medal count by Sudhir! He won a coveted gold and once again showed his dedication and determination. He continues to do well on the field. Congratulations and best wishes for all the upcoming endeavours.” ,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on Twitter.

Former India batsman Wasim Jaffer tweeted, “Congratulations Sudhir for creating history by winning India’s first gold medal in Para-Powerlifting at the Commonwealth Games.”

Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra tweeted: “Excellent Sudhir bhai! Congratulations on the gold medal and new sports record.”

“Sudhir starts India’s medal tally in #CWG2022. Congratulations on your maiden Commonwealth Games gold medal. Yet another athlete from Haryana makes his mark on the world stage. Today on the mat for a display of skill and spirit. Together you showed the world what champions are made of,” tweeted Union Minister Anurag Thakur.

Sudhir, a bronze medalist in the Asian Para Games, is disabled due to the effects of polio.
