Sweet 16 for Novak Djokovic as Wimbledon Seeds Crash Out

Defending champion Novak Djokovic advanced to the third round of Wimbledon for the 16th time on Wednesday as potential semi-final rival Casper Roode was eliminated. Top seed Djokovic beat Australia’s 79th-ranked Thanasi Kokinakis 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 to face Serbian compatriot Miomir Kekmanovic in the last-16. Ruud, seeded third and French Open runner-up, was beaten 3-6, 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 by 112th-ranked Ugo Humbert.

Djokovic, looking to join Pete Sampras as seven-time Wimbledon champion, said: “I am very pleased with my performance. I started very well from behind the court.”

“I made him work for every point and all around the court,” said the 20-time major winner.

Kokinakis compared Djokovic to a “brick wall” before the match. “It was one-way traffic. I was hacked today,” said the 26-year-old Australian after Center Court agony.

Kontaveit, Muguruza, Radukanu out

In the women’s event, second seed Annette Kontaveit lost to Germany’s Julie Niemeyer 6–4, 6–0 as the Estonian missed another Grand Slam.

Kontaveit has made it to the quarterfinals of a Major only once in 29 attempts.

Ninth seed and 2017 champion Garbine Muguruza also lost to Grete Minon of Belgium 6-4, 6-0 in a delayed first round match.

US Open champion Emma Radukanu crashed out of Wimbledon on Wednesday after losing her second round match against Caroline Garcia 6-3, 6-3 to the dismay of the British home crowd.

The 10th seed, who suffered from a side strain in the run-up to the tournament, was beaten five times by her French rival, ranked 55th in the world.

‘Amazing Support’

Lesya Surenko reached the third round for the second time after defeating compatriot Enhelina Kalinina of Ukraine in three sets. Surenko, ranked 101, proudly wore a Ukrainian ribbon on her shirt.

“It was a big court. Two Ukrainian players but a lot of people were watching us. We felt amazing support,” Surenko said after the 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 win. “Today on the way from the hotel to the club, we found a driver,” she said. “She has taken two people from Ukraine to her home.

“I think it’s amazing when people help Ukrainians so much.”
