Afghanistan spinner Mujeeb ur Rahman shook Scotland with a sensational spell as he picked up a 16-ball five-wicket haul to lead his side to a stunning 130-run victory in the Super 12 match of the 2021 T20 World Cup in Sharjah on Monday. Chasing a target of 191 for victory, Scotland had a good start and were 28/0 after 3.1 overs when Mujeeb gave his side the much-needed breakthrough in his second over by dismissing opposition captain Kyle Coetzer. A deceptive delivery from Mujeeb was missed by Coetzer before taking the wicket. On the very next ball, Mujeeb dismissed Callum McLeod for a duck on the first ball.

While the Afghan spinner didn’t get a hat-trick, he got his third wicket in the same over when he dismissed Richie Berrington for a duck in another LBW call.

In his next over, Mujeeb dismissed George Munsay for 25 to put the Afghans in the driver’s seat.

The 20-year-old youngster completed five wickets in the final delivery of his spell when he bowled Mark Watt to leave Scotland 45/7.

The Scots could not recover from Mujeeb’s flamboyant spell and lost the first match of their Super 12 campaign by 130 runs. Mujeeb finished with figures of 5/20 in his four overs.

Earlier in the day, Afghanistan won the toss and decided to bat first. Nabjibullah Zadran scored 59 runs, while Hazratullah Zazai and Rahmanullah Gurbaz scored 44 and 46 respectively, helping their team to a total of 190/4.

In Scotland’s chase, Rashid Khan also played a key role for Afghanistan, taking four for nine in 2.2 overs.
