“They Need To Find Solutions”: Pragyan Ojha Expresses Concern Over Cheteshwar Pujara And Ajinkya Rahane’s Form

Former India spinner Pragyan Ojha feels senior batsmen Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara need to find a solution as both the players could not do much in the first innings of the first Test against New Zealand at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur on Thursday. Both Pujara and Rahane got off to a good start but failed to get a big total against New Zealand’s fast bowling line-up. While Pujara dismissed the keeper off a Tim Southee delivery, Rahane was beaten by Kyle Jamieson’s pace and bounce, hitting a stump.

During a discussion on Cricbuzz, Ojha analyzed the dismissal patterns of Pujara and Rahane.

“As we know, Pujara struggles against in-swinging deliveries. He has been dismissed lbw on several occasions. So, to make up for this, he is trying to play a little closer, but that doesn’t help him. Now, he is getting out with an outside edge,” Ojha said.

The former Indian cricketer also lauded the New Zealand team for their compact field placement, not allowing Indian batsmen to take singles and forcing them to commit mistakes.

“If you look at the field placement, most of the players are inside the circle because they don’t want India to take a single. They want them to score runs through the square-leg area, but the bowlers are trying to bowl a straight edge. Or as much as possible to achieve LBW,” he said.

Pragyan Ojha said that Pujara and Rahane need to rectify their mistakes as both stand at a crucial point in their respective careers.

He concluded, “They (Pujara and Rahane) are standing at a difficult juncture in their careers. They have to find a solution. If they keep getting out like this, things may get more difficult in future.”

India won the toss and caretaker captain Rahane decided to bat first against New Zealand in the first Test.

Shubman Gill gave India a decent start when Mayank Agarwal couldn’t do much on the first day. Gill played a brilliant knock of 53 before being cast by Jamieson.

At tea time, India were in the middle of 154/4 with Shreyas Iyer and Ravindra Jadeja. Jamieson was one of those bowlers for the Kiwis team, with three dismissals to his name.
