India beat Spain 3-2 in their opening Group B match of the Uber Cup at the Ceres Arena in Aarhus on Sunday. In the opening clash of the tie, India’s leading women’s singles player in the Uber Cup, Saina Nehwal was forced to retire against Spain’s Clara Azurmendi after she felt a sudden pain in her back. Before retiring from the match, the Indians lost the opening game 20-22 to world number 58 Azurmendi. With this, Saina could not continue the second game.

For the second match of the tie, Malvika Bansod led India to a fight as the 20-year-old defeated world No. 71 Beatriz Corrales in straight games. The left-handed Indian shuttler defeated the Spaniard 21-13, 21-15.

In the third match, doubles pairing Tanisha Crasto and Rutaparna Panda took India ahead when they defeated Paula Lopez and Lorena Usley 21-10, 21-8.

In the fourth match, Aditi Bhatt gave India a decisive lead in the tie. She defeated 18-year-old Ania Setien in straight games 21-16, 21-14.

In the second doubles match of the tie, Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy lost 18-21, 21-14, 17-21 to Clara Azurmendi and Beatriz Corrales.

India’s Uber Cup team will now play Scotland on 12 October followed by Thailand on 13 October.
