A US judge has recommended the dismissal of a civil rape case against Cristiano Ronaldo over a Las Vegas incident more than a decade ago. Former model, Catherine Mayorga alleged that Ronaldo attacked her in a hotel room in 2009. The Portuguese international has always denied allegations of sexual assault, saying their encounter was consensual. The criminal case against Manchester United was dropped two years ago, with prosecutors saying there was no possibility of a conviction. But Mayorga, who has waived her right to anonymity, took a civil action to seek damages.
In a recommendation filed on Wednesday, Magistrate Judge Daniele Albreguets recommended that Ronaldo’s motion to end the case be approved.
Albreguets, whose recommendation will be reviewed by a different judge who is actually hearing the case, blamed Mayorga’s lawyers for the move and said he has raised his case over leaked communications between Ronaldo and his legal team. based, which were privileged.
“The dismissal of Mayorga’s lawyer’s case for improper conduct is a harsh consequence,” Albreguets wrote.
But “if the court does not grant a case-closing ban,[his lawyer’s]actions could have far-reaching, dangerous consequences on the legality of the judicial process.”
Ronaldo’s lawyer Peter Christiansen welcomed the recommendation.
“We are pleased with the court’s detailed review of this case and its willingness to apply the law appropriately to the facts and to recommend the dismissal of the civil case against Mr. Ronaldo,” he said.
There was no immediate response to AFP’s request for comment from Mayorga’s lawyers.
