Royal Challengers Bangalore batsman Virat Kohli on Friday became the first batsman to complete 6,500 runs in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. The right-handed batsman achieved the feat against Punjab Kings in the ongoing game at the Brabourne Stadium. The former RCB captain scored 6,500 runs in his 220th game in the cash-rich league. In the current match, Kohli did this feat in the opening over of RCB’s innings off Harpreet Brar.
Prior to this game, Kohli had scored 6,499 runs in 219 matches at an average of 36.31 in the IPL.
The batsman’s best performance in the league came in 2016 where he scored 973 runs. In that particular season, Kohli scored four centuries, helping RCB reach the final. In the summit clash, the side came up short against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Coming to the current season, Kohli started batting at No 3 and registered two back-to-back ducks against Lucknow Super Giants and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
After that Kohli started opening for the franchise and in the game against Gujarat Titans, he scored 58 runs in 53 balls. In the next match against Chennai Super Kings, Kohli scored 30 runs in 33 balls.
Before RCB’s last game against SRH, Kohli needed just one run to reach 6,500 but he fell on the very first ball of the game off Jagdish Suchit.
The batsman will be expected to return to his fluent self to help RCB reach the playoff stage.
Talking about international cricket, Kohli last scored an international century in a day-night Test against Bangladesh in 2019 and since then, the three-digit mark has eluded him.
