“We trust each other blindly”: Mohammad Rizwan on batting with Babar Azam

Pakistan captain Babar Azam and fellow opener Mohammad Rizwan have forged a formidable partnership in the top-order, and on Thursday, they shared the highest partnership for any team in T20Is as they scored 203 runs in the second match against England. Make it T20 in Karachi. He broke his own record of 197 runs in the chase against South Africa. After the match, the duo spoke to the Pakistan Cricket Board about their partnership and what made them tick.

While both the players admitted that they have great communication and understanding, Rizwan said that they blindly trust each other while batting.

Rizwan said, “We trust each other so much that we often blindly trust each other. If he says ‘Rizzi, you have to hit’, I do.”

“Because the way we communicate, we’re always trying to understand that ‘okay now he’s capable of hitting, let him do it now’. Like in today’s innings, earlier I was hitting more. Then a time came when he took over and we were able to reach our goal.”

Babar Azam, who scored an unbeaten century in the match against England while chasing Pakistan’s 199, said that they keep talking to each other while batting and they always have a plan.

“We play according to the situation and try to build a partnership and create a platform for the middle order so that it is easy for them. We plan it in such a way that we get 80-90 in the first 10 overs. We make the score. We plan things over and over again, which over to take the risk in and which over to play it safe,” Babar said.

“As Rizwan said, sometimes he clicks and I don’t and sometimes I click and he doesn’t. But when we’re both playing well there’s constant communication between us. -Keep talking to others and that really helps us. And if we take it deep, we know we can score 10-15 runs per over.”

While Babar Azam scored 110 runs in 66 balls, Rizwan scored 88* in 51 balls.

This was Babar’s second T20I century, both of which he chased.
