Australia have already made it to the final of the ICC World Test Championship after winning the third Test against India in Indore. Although India lead the series 2-1 and are second on the WTC points table, their progress to the final is not guaranteed. Apart from India, Sri Lanka also remains in the race, currently occupying the third spot. The Lankans have a 2 match series against New Zealand, a whitewash in which the Lankans can qualify for the summit clash against the Aussies.

India heavily favored their qualification chances by winning the first two matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy but a defeat in the Indore match derailed their progress a bit. Although the loss was not significant, India needed to avoid defeat in the Ahmedabad Test to keep things in their hands.

How can India qualify for the World Test Championship final?

1. A win against Australia in the fourth Test will automatically give India a ticket to the World Test Championship final. With a PCT of 60.29, India is ahead of Sri Lanka (PCT of 53.33%) in the standings. With a win, India’s place in the finals would be assured, regardless of the outcome of the Sri Lanka-New Zealand Test series.

2. If India only draws the fourth Test, Sri Lanka can beat it 2-0 against New Zealand. Seeing anything less than a clean sweep will see the Islanders remain third on the WTC points table.

3. If Ahmedabad repeats Indore test result, India may be out of WTC final race. But, for such a development Sri Lanka will have to win both their matches against New Zealand.

Overall, anything less than a 2–0 result would result in Sri Lanka’s exit from the final rankings of the World Test Championship.
