Klimt Kolesnikov became the first person to swim the 50-meter backstroke in under 24 seconds on Monday as he broke his own world record in discipline at the European Aquatics Championships. The 20-year-old Russian Kolesnikov finished the semi-finals in 23.93 seconds, seven hundredths better than his previous record of 24 seconds at the 2018 European Championships in Glasgow, where he won three gold medals.

The 50-meter backstroke is not an Olympic event. The Tokyo Games are due from 23 July to 8 August.
