Indian judoka Shushila Devi Likmabam will take on London 2012 bronze medalist Eva Cernovichki of Hungary in the women’s 48kg opening bout at Tokyo 2020. Shushila Devi, who is making her Summer Games debut, is India’s only representative in judo at the Tokyo Olympics. . Eva Cernovichi is ranked 24th in the world while Shushila Devi is ranked 46th in the Olympics. In her last bout, at the Grand Slam Hungary 2020, the veteran Cernovichski defeated Shushila. According to Olympic.com, if Shushila Devi beats Eva Cernovichki, an encounter with home favorite Funa Tonaki in the Round of 16 awaits the Indian judoka.

Third seed Funa Tonaki is a former world champion and has also won silver at the 2021 Judo World Masters. In judo at Tokyo 2020, the top seeds in each weight category (based on the total number of participants) receive a first round bye. Sushila Devi is ranked 17th in women’s 48kg.

The elimination and medal rounds for the judo women’s 48kg event will take place on Saturday at Mat No. 1 in Nippon Budokan – which has hosted concerts for The Beatles in the past.

The Judo Women’s 48kg bouts will start at 7.30 am IST. Shushila Devi will face the tenth match on Mat 1.
